gdk-pixbuf symbol not found

By chimo on (updated on )

If you’re running Alpine Linux edge right now and some of your applications (for me, signal-desktop. For others, Firefox) throw an error similar to the following:

g_module_open() failed for /usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-xpm.so: Error relocating /usr/lib/libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0: gly_pixel_density_new: symbol not found Executing gtk+3.0-3.24.52-r0.trigger

A workaround is to downgrade gdk-pixbuf.

I don’t downgrade/pin packages very often. As a result, I never remember how to do it. In this case, I followed the process described by the commenter:

  1. Add the 3.24 repositories as “tagged repositories” in /etc/apk/repositories:

@v3.24 http://dl-cdn.alpinelinux.org/alpine/v3.24/main
@v3.24 http://dl-cdn.alpinelinux.org/alpine/v3.24/community

  1. Install that specific version:

apk add gdk-pixbuf@v3.24

You can also provide a specific version number to `apk add` as described in the “Package pinning” section of the Alpine wiki.
